MLM (Official name: Sociedade do Metro Ligeiro de Macau, S.A. / Macao Light Rapid Transit Corporation, Limited) is established by Macao SAR Government according to the Administrative Regulation No. 8/2019 of the Macao Special Administrative Region. The Company's registered capital is MOP 1.4 billion. In respect of ordinary shares, the Macao Special Administrative Region has a 96% stake in the Company, the Industrial and Commercial Development Fund has a 3% share, and the remaining 1% share is held by the Science and Technology Development Fund. The main responsibilities of MLM are the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure and equipment for the Macao Light Rapid Transit (MLRT), the operation of MLRT, including the operation management and provision of passenger service. Furthermore, MLM also provides the derivative services, such as advertisement, commercial service etc.
In September 2019, the Macao SAR Government has signed a 10-year concession contract with MLM for the operation and maintenance of MLRT. The Macao SAR Government also engaged MTR (Macau), a subsidiary company wholly owned by the MTR Corporation Limited, to assist in the provision of the operation and maintenance services of the MLRT (Taipa Line) during the initial phase of operation until December 2024. The service scope covers the day-to-day operation of train services, as well as the maintenance of the trains, signaling systems and infrastructures of MLRT. Subsequently, the Macao SAR Government transferred its contractual position to MLM.
